Joshua Blahyi, also known as General Butt Naked, is a former warlord and commander in Liberia's First Liberian Civil War in the 1990s. He gained infamy for his brutal tactics, including human sacrifice and cannibalism, during the conflict.
Blahyi was born in 1971 in Liberia and joined the rebel group United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy (ULIMO) in the early 1990s. He later formed his own group called the Butt Naked Brigade, which earned its name from Blahyi's practice of fighting naked except for shoes and carrying out gruesome acts of violence.
Blahyi claimed to have killed thousands of people during the war and admitted to sacrificing children in rituals believed to give him supernatural powers. After the war ended in 1996, he converted to Christianity and became a preacher, renouncing his violent past and seeking forgiveness for his actions.
Blahyi has since worked to rehabilitate former child soldiers and promote peace and reconciliation in Liberia. He also wrote a book, "The Redemption of an African Warlord," detailing his transformation and seeking to raise awareness about the horrors of war.
Despite his efforts at redemption, Blahyi remains a controversial figure, with some questioning the sincerity of his conversion and others arguing that he should face justice for his crimes during the war.
